Camaro pump change

Got a new pump for the camaro as its either the rubber hose in the tank that's failed or the pump itself as not enough pressure is making it to the engine
To change the rubber hose it's a lot if work to get there, so while I'm in there thought I'd change the pump assembly. There was an option to change the pump, fuel sender and pipes so went for that.
Started to look at this today.

Nicely jacked up. I need to disconnect the 4 pipes related to the fuel system.

Pipes are different diameteres to each other so no chance of connecting it up wrong.

Fuel sender plug is just above the diff.

Pipes are on the drivers side above the axle. Jacking up the car high to let the axle hang certainly helps with access. Started to undo the jubilee clips and spring clips. Rust buster on them as I expect the rubber has become fused to the metal.

This is the progress so far.

The pipe with thread fixing I'm using a 3/4 inch and 5/8 pipe spanner to undo it.

Pipes were a pain to disconnect, WD40 in the end of the rubber and mole grips to lightly grab the rubber to twist it to get it to break free. The spanner one was simple. IMG_20210102_154824.jpg

Vacuumed around the ring then undone it. I can start to lift the pump out. Hoping I may be able to feed the pipes through.

Looking where the pipes go. They are clamped in under the metal work by the tank. The tank to the left, pipes go under some rubber/sponge.

Will need to release the straps to drop the tank.
IMG_20210102_160610.jpg

Will need to release this suspention part too.

I will need to lower the passenger side first and slide towards the passenger side this is so the filler neck is free of the body work. I think I only need to lower it 1 inch to free the pipes. This is a job for another day. Good progress and soo close.

Going to paint all the metal work once tank out?

Tank propped up ready to release the tank. IMG_20210103_113638.jpg

Straps released but it it enough to remove the pipes? IMG_20210103_114506.jpg

Due to the pipe assembly being so long in the tank there is no waggle room to get them out. Sure I can get them out by bending them, but I wouldn't be able to get the new ones in. Graheme was right, tank out time.

Released one suspention bar, it gives me more drop but not enough.

Needed to drop these two bars, this will give me the access. Dropping the tank on this side first, then filler pipe will be free.

Managed to free the nuts, but bolts are being stubborn. To get a socket/breaker bar on this I needed to remove the spring

Breaker bar not budging it, so letting it soak in rust buster overnight.

Got one off. Really need to get the last one off to get the tank out. Its almost there. I'll save some enjoyment for another day.

Old rusty bolts, I'm sure ones in the titanic would be in better shape than these. Not much left stopping the tank from coming out. All new stuff going in. Perhaps I should have got a new tank. There is about 7 litres of fuel in it. Not alot, but seeing no leaks, so perhaps some rust treatment on it, it will last longer.

Gave it some Plus Gas for an hour. Then got the 3ft breaker bar and stood on the end. Something was going to go and I'm glad it was the bolt that moved. It was very stiff. More fluid and many turns and wacking it it finally came free. IMG_20210103_173331.jpg

So now that bar is out of the way the tank is almost out.

It's fowling on the assemble I undone the bolts from. If that wasn't there it would help, it looks to be welded. The axle dosn't appear to be causing an issue. If the shocks were disconnected and the able hung lower it may help with twisting the tank
The part that is the issue is the long filler neck, can't move the tank to the passengers side far enough. Plus with the bend in the filler neck dosn't help. Looking at the filler neck I need to lift the tank on the passenger side and slide towards the passenger side, but this can't happen as the chassis is in the way. Perhaps some rotation needed. It may well be I need to move the axle. I'll check some videos.

Good luck

Looks like I need to disconnect the shock and sway bar. A job for another day.
