This is a very rare and unique opportunity that doesn t come up every day to acquire a classic 1966 Mustang built in restomod style. If you ever thought you would like to own a classic Mustang that you could use every day and be reliable but still able to pick up her skirts and get going and surprise a few folk, but you do not have the time space or ability to build one yourself this is the one for you. This Mustang was originally planned to be built for someone who wanted a reliable quick classic but has now decided to go down the Audi R8 route. 99.9% finished up and running just requiring a few minor jobs and painting in any colour you desire.
Starting with a solid but very tired stock 1966 289 powered coupe which was recently imported to the UK from a dry state, the car required the minimum of rust repairs in the usual Mustang areas of the front floor and battery tray a rea which have been repaired and replaced and is very good for a 49 year old Ford.
It has been fitted with a later fresh 302 v8 replacing the old 289. The 302 was stripped and has had the block rebored for the first time at 30 thou oversize from stock and new pistons fitted and the crankshaft reground at the same time. The stock non adjustable valve gear was replaced with a Comp cams high energy performance camshaft along with their roller rockers, double valve springs ,retainers and hardened pushrods along with a Cloyes timing chain and pulleys and a set of Rhodes bleed down lifters. The cylinder heads were rebuilt and set up by a local machine shop and will run happily on unleaded fuel. The stock factory inlet manifold and 2 barrel carburettor was replaced by an Edelbrock inlet manifold and Holley four barrel carburettor with a new Mallory HEI distributor replacing the stock points and coil setup. The water, fuel, and oil pumps are new items also. Some engine dress up parts fitted are new bug eye air cleaner, new alloy rocker covers and a new MP sports throttle linkage. A new radiator with new hoses was fitted along with a MR Gasket 16 inch electric fan and control unit replacing the stock metal fan.

The original stock 3 speed gearbox has been replaced with a brand new out of the crate T5 world class 5 speed gearbox as fitted to the newer V8 Mustangs not the Sierra cosworth type along a with new clutch, thrust bearing and rebuilt prop shaft. The conversion was none using a kit from California Mustang who also supplied the conversion parts. to use the stock clutch release assembly which was also rebuilt to be used with the newer engine block. There is also a new hydraulic clutch release upgrade conversion kit from Modern drive line not yet fitted but supplied with the car.
The 8 inch rear axle has been fitted with a new crown wheel and pinion with a lower 3.55 ratio to give greater acceleration and take advantage of the overdrive gearbox along with a new Ford Tork Lok limited slip differential unit along with new bearings and seals. New 4/5 leaf rear springs have been fitted along with new Monroe shock absorbers and an aftermarket Whiteline rear anti sway bar plus a heavy duty rear shackle kit.

The whole front suspension and steering has been replaced and rebuilt with new parts. The front springs are new progressive rate coils with new Monroe shock absorbers and a thicker anti roll bar from stock. The rubber bushes on the new items have been removed and replaced with polyurethane ones before fitting.

The original stock steering box and linkages has been replaced and upgraded with a new Unisteer rack and pinion steering kit. Although it is un power assisted it is still light and easy to use.

The stock drum brake front and rear setup has been replaced and upgraded with a new SSBC 4 piston calipers with 11 inch vented disk kit at the front. This kit is apparently much the same as the Kelsey Hayes setup that were fitted to Shelby Mustangs. The rear brakes have been rebuilt with new wheel cylinders, bearings, shoes, drums, cables, hoses, lines and fitting kit. The original single line master cylinder has been replaced by a SSBC twin line power servo kit with new flexible hoses and hard lines with an adjustable bias valve incorporated.

The exhaust system is a new two and a half inch stainless steel performance one from Magnaflow with new Hooker headers.

The original old and faulty gauges in the dashboard have been replaced with a new set made for the 1966 Mustang from Classic Instruments which mount using their kit behind the standard facia and look just like the stock factory ones along with a new 1966 rally Pac from Scott drake which mounts on the steering column and houses a rev counter and clock. The old faulty wiring loom was removed and replaced at the same time with a replacement loom kit from American Autowire made for the 1964/66 Mustang which included new light and ignition switches plus comes with a new larger more modern fuse box and relay pack. The old alternator and external control box was removed and replaced at the same time for a new 100 amp one wire one as per American Autowire s recommendations along with a new battery.
New items in the pony interior include a new 15 inch Grant black rimed steering wheel, Hurst shifter handle and ball, carpets, seatbelts the front ones converted to 3 point, Hump hugger arm rest with cubby hole and drink holders. The heater unit was rebuilt with a copper matrix new seals and clips.

The underside and interior of the body has been sprayed with Raptor pickup bed two pack liner for protection.

The wheels are new Rocket five spoke fitted with new BF Goodrich tyres.
The idea was to try and build a classic Mustang and make it reliable and suitable for everyday driving with a bit more performance than standard. So as you can see all the old and worn components were removed replaced or upgraded making this a 90% new car. This Mustang is very free revving and by far the quickest 302 of all the many Ford small block powered vehicles that I have built and driven. Having said all that the car will require some finishing off but these are little things that could be done by almost anyone at home as all the main spannering work has been more or less done. The main things remaining to be addressed are front and rear window rubbers and chrome trim, the front screen is getting a bit milky at the bottom but is still serviceable at the moment. The bonnet and boot lid will require a small repair at the edges the size of a fifty pence piece. body is solid but the paintwork is rough it looks like it has been applied with a yard brush but then you can paint it any colour you want, I was just going to run it for a while in grey primer or matt black while saving for a proper respray. As somebody commentated after a run in the car it looks like s**t but goes like s**t.

This Mustang has had over18K worth of new parts alone fitted to it so far that s not counting the initial purchase price of the base car. It is UK registered with an age related number. But with a little more investment in paint and some trim it will be a 30k plus Mustang in the end. The one and only reason this Mustang is being offered for sale or trade is because I recently had a major operation to have the big c removed and after thirty odd years of working on V8 muscle cars, Harleys, rods and the odd armoured car and WW2 military vehicle am now finding things a bit of a struggle now. I would be looking for a reserve as near to what s been spent on the car or a possible trade up or down with ether an older American car or maybe a newer Mustang possibly a rod although it would have to be an automatic.

There are of course dozens and dozens of other things done and replaced that I have not mentioned here like the fuel tank and hoses engine and gearbox mounts and any rubber seal or grommet that had decayed over time but this covers the majority of the main things done.
