Allergic to vinegar?

At a hotel we are staying at, a gentleman of late 50s was entertaining his lady friend over a meal. The waitress asked if he would like vinegar or anything else. He said he is allergic to vinegar and would like tomato sauce.
Isn't tomato sauce mostly made from vineger. If I was that waitress I would have replied, "no, I cannot serve you tomato sauce as you said you were allergic to one of the main ingredients."

Different type of vinegar perhaps?
Ok with white wine vinegar but allergic to malt vinegar perhaps?

Yeah could be allergic to different types. Or he was thinking it would impress his lady friend somehow.
