Vehicle thefts fell 14.5 per cent in the UK in 2020 compared with the previous year, according to new data.

There were 28,454 vehicle thefts last year logged by the 26 police forces responding to a freedom of information request - down from 33,289 in 2019. Areas of the Midlands and the north of England appeared most badly affected, with the West Midlands seeing 11,506 thefts in 2019 and 2020 combined - more than any other region.

Broken down on a smaller scale, Birmingham West saw the most vehicle thefts of any area in 2019 and 2020 combined, although the 2020 figure of 1,375 was still smaller than the 1,730 seen in 2019. The data, which came from a freedom of information request by CompareTheMarket, showed Liverpool had the second most vehicle thefts in 2019 and 2020 (2,338), while Sheffield was third (2,322).

The top four areas for thefts all saw decreases between 2019 and 2020. Other areas in the list - Doncaster, Sandwell, Rotherham and Coventry - did see increases, however.

CompareTheMarket also analysed data from Tracker, which suggested keyless car theft accounted for 93 per cent of all vehicle thefts in 2020.
