The default setting for making a post as read was Inactivity/Cookie Based, once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the session timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies.
However with this setting it took a while before the post showed up as read.
Its now, using the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. Forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read.
So basically the 'Read' function is more accurate now, but you will have some showing up as unread at the moment until it synchronises to the new way of working.
