Subaru has announced that it will launch its first pure-electric model in Europe during the first half of the 2020s.

The brand’s upcoming EV, which will be an SUV, will share its platform, drivetrain technology and body panels with the recently unveiled Toyota BZ SUV, becoming another competitor for the likes of the Volkswagen ID.4 and upcoming Ioniq 5.

Like the Toyota BZ, technical details have not yet been confirmed, although we do know that it’ll be based on the pair’s jointly developed e-TNGA electric car platform. Subaru has also given us a rough indication of the SUV’s size, saying it’ll have similar dimensions to the current-generation Forester.

Toyota and Subaru have also said the new platform will play to both brands’ strengths. As such, the new C-segment SUV will combine Toyota’s experience with electric technology with Subaru’s four-wheel-drive expertise.

However, the platform will also be highly adaptable, allowing either front, rear or four-wheel drive. It’ll be scalable too – Toyota and Subaru already have a broad range of models planned for the underpinnings, including a larger D-segment SUV and a saloon car.

The platform features an electric motor on the front axle and a low-mounted battery pack, presumably to benefit the car’s weight distribution and packaging. A concept sculpture previewing the model was revealed earlier in 2020.

The new electric platform will help Subaru achieve its long-term emissions goals. By 2030, the Japanese manufacturer is aiming for all-electric or hybrid-electric vehicles to account for at least 40 percent of its global sales figures.

Subaru started its shift towards electrification late last year, by launching new hybrid variants of the XV and Forester – the latter of which features the brand’s e-Boxer PHEV powertrain. By 2050, Subaru hopes to reduce the average CO2 emissions of its new vehicles by 90 percent, when compared to 2010. The brand had planned to launch an electric vehicle using an adapted version of its Global Platform in 2021, but plans for that vehicle have now been scrapped.
