Vauxhall has confirmed that it will reopen its Ellesmere Port production facility in Cheshire on 17 August, following prolonged factory shutdown during the UK’s Covid-19 pandemic.
Opened in 1962, the Ellsemere Port factory is a manufacturing site for the Astra hatchback and employs over 1,000 people, but the production line has been suspended since 17 March.
Since shutdown, Vauxhall has been working to implement new safety and sterilisation protocols, in order to enable the safe resumption of vehicle manufacturing on the site.
The company claims 100 measures have been introduced to keep staff safe, including daily checking of employees’ temperatures, provision of personal protective equipment, regular cleaning of tools and equipment, and the encouragement of physical distancing between employees where possible.
“This health and safety barrier protocol was validated by a Group PSA audit that took place on 24 April 2020, which enables the resumption of production of the Astra on 17 August, in a progressive and safe manner,” said Stephen Norman, Managing Director, Vauxhall Motors.
Some 180-plus Ellesmere Port staff have temporarily been assigned to the firm’s Luton van production facility, adding a third shift to assist with the production of new generation vans such as the latest Vauxhall Vivaro, and sister vans from Peugeot and Citroen in the form of the latest Expert and Dispatch models.
