A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

I'll see if I can get to one of the breakfast runs. I think Jan will be out but I don't see why I shouldn't be able to do Feb, I'll definitely have it sorted by then. Believe it or not, I've had old cars ever since I've been able to drive but never taken a car to a show or car club meet or...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

Sadly not. The part I need for the kickdown is coming from the states so I think Xmas and new year will slow it down too much for that. I guess the next nearest event would be the season opener in April, is it? I'm going to try to keep driving it occasionally through winter though instead of...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

This thing might be coming home very soon! It went for MOT today, which of course it passed. It also went for a good 30 odd mile test drive which only threw up one issue with the auto box kickdown. So I'm just waiting for that to be sorted then it's all finished. I also taxed it (for free!)...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

Yes the headlight actuators are interesting things. These ones are used on the Mercury Marquis and almost identical Lincoln Continental cars. Though they are similar to the ones used on the Mercury Cougar, the Cougar type are fairly easy to get reconditioned but the type for my Marquis aren't! I...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

It's been a while since I've updated this. For anyone still interested, the engine was removed and stripped down. This revealed some very worn piston rings and bores, all the valves were worn, crank bearings just about worn through to the bronze underneath the bearing surface, timing chain so...

    Your car history

All mk2 Granada's were built in Cologne. Originally mk1 Granny's were built both here in the UK and Cologne, after 1976 full production moved to Cologne only. Europe also got certain engines we didn't and they also got a very nice looking 2 door saloon version (not the coupe version!) that we...

    Your first American car

This, 73 Mercury Marquis 429ci. The first and so far only yank I've owned. Nothing like starting with something enormous!

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

I didn't get any pics when I was down at their workshop. I didn't think they'd like it!

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

Cheers! That's good to know! There was all sorts of nice stuff in there when I dropped the Mercury off. They had some really old thing in one workshop, looked like it was having an aluminium body built for it! They certainly seem to know what they're doing. If you work nearby maybe you'll see...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

It's just a bog standard solid iron block. I don't know yet how badly worn it is but a rebore and oversize pistons should see it right. I suspected something more might be wrong with it though. The last time I had it running the crank case breather seemed to be chugging away a lot. It looked...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

It's broken! So, for anyone interested in my Mercury. I've finally admitted defeat with the running problems on this. Try as I might absolutely nothing I've tried has made any difference. Being a pretty unsophisticated old yank V8 there really can't be much that's causing the problem. So I bit...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

Thanks. I don't really have any plans, other than get it to actually run and drive reliably. I'd like to keep it in totally stock and original condition.

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

To be honest at this point I'd take any help I can get! I think it needs another set of eyes (or hands) on it now, I'm just getting annoyed with it and going around in circles! I'll gladly pay someone to sort it out but I can't drive it anywhere to get it fixed. Been playing around with it all...

A new vehicle has been created in the garage!

It came over in July/August time in 2014. Since then it's been on the road only once! It did about 30 odd miles up the A3, came home then was put away for winter. This year unfortunately it's had starting problems which I've fixed, charging problems which I've fixed and now it will run but I...

    So

If the weather stays dry, which it sounds like it won't, I'll finally be getting the Mercury out for a run after so long repairing it and getting it running again. Haven't driven it since November! Other than that relaxing and not working!

What have you done to your vehicle today?

Just an update on my non starting troubles. It's finally fixed! Turns out the condenser was dead. I had checked for a spark and it did have one but it obviously wasn't a good enough one to run properly. Starts well now, runs and revs perfectly. Just changed oil and filter as it stank of petrol...

What have you done to your vehicle today?

It will start very briefly on easy start if sprayed down the carb. But if the servo is allowing air into the inlet system the air is entering below the carb so weakening the air/fuel mix. Adding the easy start is just adding more flammable stuff to the petrol to balance out the air leak.
