Taxing Question

Now, I have a little question for the Renegades hive mind. My latest acquisition was first registered in 1981 so is now 40 years old. It was only imported into this country in 2006 which is when it was first registered with the DVLA. I have been trying to tax it, but, despite it being tax exempt, the DVLA say as it was only registered in 2006 it isn't eligible.

I have documentation from the Historic VW Register confirming it is a 1981 vehicle but there doesn't seem to be any way of getting this taken into consideration when trying to get it taxed.

Anyone else had similar issues? Any ideas gratefully received as always.

Thanks is advance.

What dose the tax gov website say? What did the old owner do?? Has it been registered with dvla wrong? Is it clashed as been modified? As this will effect its mot in turn mybe tax??? It my be 81 but wen in 81 might not be 40 just yet

How far did you get on taxing it on gov website? My el camino truck you had to go through to final payment it then said zero payment on my 69 truck..

She no responses yet from anybody else Doh must all be on facetube lol shamefully lol

May be a phone call to dvla. Trouble is it seems they are going by the date registered, so you could even put an age related plate to the year it came over.
It's been registered wrong and it may not be easy to undo.
Matts yellow Camaro was a few years wrong too, it was registered as a newer year.

I didn't get as far as entering my payment details. I might try that and see where it gets me. It is MoTd as a 1981 Transporter so maybe that will go through the system as that. Thank you.

Update: Tried doing as you suggested but it comes back as the tax is £294 for the year. I suspect that it may be as Dan suggested and the van may be incorrectly registered. Tried to speak to someone at the DVLA but you get trapped in an endless loop of "You have five options press 1 for etc etc" none of which seem to be to allow you to speak to an actual person.

I've tried to get through but you just never seem to get to speak to anyone. That's my fear too that its registered on the year it was imported and not on the year of manufacture. Odd thing is it comes up as being 1981 on the MoT. If I cant resolve it soon I may have to bite the bullet and pay the tax just to get it on the road and then go through the tortuous process of getting it correctly registered. Thanks.

Update: Spent two hours on the phone to the DVLA again this morning trapped in an endless loop of "Press 1 for etc etc", none of which allows you to speak to an actual person, Hopefully their e-mail enquiry service will give me the answer, but I'm not holding my breath!

Our 1978 Mustang was on a Q plate as the details on the V5 were vague,,it came into the country in 1996,spent over a year fighting but finally got the car inspected by independent company who submit findings to the DVLA and now has age related plate

I got an e-mail back from the DVLA last night saying they needed the information from the V5 (which I haven't got back yet from the DVLA ) in order to check whether or not its tax exempt. I have a feeling its going to be the same as your Mustang in that its currently registered on the date it was imported rather than the date on which it was manufactured. I'm resigned to the fact now that I'm almost certainly going to have to pay to tax it this year and then try and get it correctly registered which could take ages.

The DVLA are absolutely useless. They managed to send me a "We understand you are the new keeper of this vehicle and you need to either SORN it or Tax or you will be committing an offence" letter the day after the I got the V5 but so far have failed to respond to my enquires regarding the tax status of the van, despite me sending them copies of the documents proving its tax exempt, with anything other than. "Thank you for you're enquiry" e-mails. It's actually impossible to actually speak to someone so, consequently, I've had to pay to tax it so I can collect and then I'll have to have the what I expect will be the tortuous discussions with the DVLA about the tax exempt status.
