Perhaps moving web server

The webserver we are on have been running for over 1400 days non stop. Has good CPU, good amrounf of RAM and Hard drive space. The daily backups are now over 60gb per day.
The cost of running the server and backups need to be cut back a bit. As the backups are 60gb a day (solent renegades is 32gb), I need to move backups to the next larger backup package @ 12.50exVAT a month. There are other backup options I could look into on other backup servers, but where this one a bare metal backup and the tools are on this server, its handy its all provided and supported by the same people.

The server we have is a dedicated server. I'll could be looking into a powerful VPS server. Its not just this website I host sites for other people too. So I cant make this decision easily, as wil need to make sure all websites would migrate with no downtime. It may never happen and I may just suck up the extra cost.

Dan, can't the cost come out of the club funds? It seems unfair that you should pay for it.

It hosts other people's websites too, admittedly I did have to increase the power due to the demand of the club website. This new forum is more efficient than the old, so won't need as much ram and processors.
The other websites are small, the revenue I make from them covers 2 months rental of the server a year. I hope to get more websites on there to cover more months worth. Its a task I took on a accepted, grown over the years, now time to cut back if possible without effecting the feel of the website.

So often we do these things for free. When we ran the local club, all the paper, printing and web site costs were out of our own pocket.

What about your bit coin adventure could those funds help?

lol, no, Grand total of Bitcoin and ZCash is around £107. Mainly goes down in value. I have some SolarCoins too, I get awarded so many per year, I have 23.52 of them now, worth a grand total of 28pence.

I dont mind funding it, its a useful tool. Just cutting back on costs a bit, as keep adding to it, thought it was time to optimise the expence.

Been pondering over this for a number of days.

In the last 30mins just ordered a VPS server, now there is a 30 day money back on it. Also we will be on this current dedicated server for some time until migration which I can specify a date/time.

Well going to start doing the moving to the new server around 8pm tonight. So we wont be able to post replies or create threads in that time. I'll close the website down which the replication is in progress.

good luck with it :)

Thanks, All exciting stuff. Booked a time slot for migration, but no response yet, I only gave them 1 hour notice, perhaps the was a bit much to ask for on a Sunday evening, lol..

Well that was a hairy ride. Got there in the end pending DNS reolution to propogate around the world.

Had a few issues along the way. One being the migration of the database wasn't complete due to an error. Kept complaing about a duplicate ket. I blame Darren for the duplicate posts. lol. Manually edited the SQL dump file and we are back up and running.

nice one - well done :)

yep took along to mirgrate over was going to text you but didnt want to repeat myself lol,,,,,,,,,,,,

Glad you can see the website, The DNS seems to be taking a while to update around the world, longer than usualy sue to two name server changes.

Phew, was panicing how long the website has been down, and I like to aim for no downtime, as its purly swapping from one server to another. However started the DNS changes and the copy. I didn't know until a couple of hours ago that the complete database didn't come across.

trying to uplaod to another thread with 2 web links and it just keeps saying still uploading almost 5 mins now

Testing uploading pf a piccy.

It's seems Virgin are slow to update DNS as it's still pointing to the old server. However on the mobile network it's all correct. Changing Name Servers can take up 48hours so its still within the expected time.
