Changed the gearbox oil and differential oil. Suspect both have not been done before.

The gearbox in the Challenger is the Tremec TR6060, a successor to the T56 in my old (and Dan's T/A). The 6060 is used in many late model Mustangs as well as the Viper's.
It is also well known to have a difficult 2nd gear. It uses triple cone synchronisers in the lower gears instead of the more usual dual cone used in the upper gears and the T56.
This really slows down the gear change and often can be more than a little crunchy. Its a well known problem.
After much research I decided to use Royal Purple Synchromax. It has the same viscosity as the ATF used in the 6060 but with added 'stuff'. To be honest you can find as many bad reviews as you can good, but at the end of the day you pays your money and makes your choice. Finding a Viper forum where they were raving about the improvements after switching to RP helped me make up my mind, and 3.75 US Quarts later its done.
Did it make any difference? Well....yes!
I noticed it after backing off the ramps that it seemed less notchy to get into first gear. So much so , that Immediately put it back into neutral, lifted the clutch and tried again. Hmmm - definitely better. A short 5mile test drive later and its getting better all the time. 2nd still isn't the best but if the improvement continues I'll be happy.

Also used RP in the diff.
A successful couple of Saturdays maintenance done. Just need to clean it now!
