  • The Development of Natural Gas Vehicles – Iveco’s New Strategy

Italy is known to express much interest in environmentally friendly vehicle fuel. The country is considered to be the leading market in Europe with respect to natural gas consumption for vehicles, with above 1 billion cubic meters consumed last year and about 1 million vehicles in present-day circulation. Benefiting from Europe’s largest gas pipeline network, Italy is globally recognized for its technological and environmental excellence in developing natural gas chains.

In this regard, Iveco, an Italian heavyweight in the commercial transport sector, decided to reinforce the company’s R&D efforts by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with its like-minded associates: FCAGroup (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and Snam S.p.A. (natural gas infrastructure company). The MoU has a determined aim to foster the promotion of natural gas as a fuel for road vehicles. The significance of the event was underlined by the presence of Italy’s Minister of Economic Development together with Minister of Infrastructure and Transport.

According to the Memorandum, the three partnering companies – Iveco, FCA and Snam will cooperate to further boost the usage of methane for vehicles in the form of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This sustainable alternative to traditional fuels is able bring far-reaching and promising benefits to consumers, companies, public administration and, of course, nature.

As of today, Iveco has already developed a comprehensive range of both CNG and LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) transport solutions. It includes: Daily light commercial vans, Urbanway city buses and the new Stralis LNG long-haul trucks. The latter made its public debut last June, and recently, the manufacturer started first deliveries of Stralis NP trucks to Germany.

There is no doubt that methane fuelling will take Iveco trucks (www.truck1.eu/trucks/iveco) to a new level of customer appeal. CNG and LNG as fuel sources will make important contributions in the field of clean drives to ensure a relevant reduction of polluting elements and noise emissions, as the trucks powered by natural gas are known to operate in an extremely quiet mode.
