• My Cars

I was never interested in American cars and knew nothing about them. So I was surprised at the answer when I asked my boyfriend what his dream car was. I was expecting Ferrari/Porsche/Lamborghini, that sort of thing. Trans-Am? Whats a Trans-Am? Was my reply.

Who knew that a couple of years later I would not only know much more about them but get to ride in one (well a Firebird is close enough!) on a regular basis!

The passion for his hobby was and is really contagious and I started wanting an American car of my own. Hubby (by then) was enthusiastic and helped me get started.

I originally bought a 78 Mustang II with a 289. The idea was to restore the car, but time was short and eventually the car was sold as a project.

The Mustang was followed by a 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix, which was followed by a 1994 Chevy Astro Dayvan

which was followed by a 1991 Chevy Camaro RS,

followed by a 1991 Pontiac Firebird Formula (the one I should never have sold!). The 91 Formula is a car I really regret selling and would love to have it back, even though it only had the 5L and not the more desirable 5.7L. A lot of work went into that car and I knew its history including stateside before import – The DVLA shows it as being SORN, I wonder where it is?

which was followed by a 2000 Chevy Camaro 3.8L V6,

which was followed by another Chevy Dayvan this time a 1995

which was eventually replaced with the Fiero!!

The Fiero? Well all Fiero’s are rare but the rarest of them all is the 88GT. The 88GT was a one year only deal with different suspension and brakes to other years. Pontiacs plan for 1989 was a V8 version but GM killed the project and the Fiero along with it.

My Fiero still rocks the stock engine, a rather puny 2.8L V6. Some headers would wake it up nicely but parts can be expensive. The engine went through a top-end re-build a couple of years ago.

But one area the Fiero scores well is handling. With its mid mounted engine its weight distribution is good but mine also benefits from having had the suspension gone through and poly-eurothane bushings fitted throughout.

The interior is stock with exception of a couple of stainless trim pieces.

The paintwork is a little tired and could do with a respray but for now its still possible to get a nice shine. Not bad considering its age and that I daily drove it until 18 months ago!

So a big thank you to my hubby, Dave, for making it contagious and for looking after my cars for me. Most of all thank you for helping me write this article

A really good read, I had no idea you had so many yanks!

One question......the '91 Camaro's wheels, they standard? Keep seeing the RS's with those wheel and mine don't have them.

      Thank you for sharing!!

      Thanks Sarah.

Yes they are standard. They were Black when I bought the car and we painted them silver

      Those style wheels are correct.
The wheels on Clare's (and Sarah's should be) 15x7. Later 3rd gens (90-92) had 16x8 but the same style.

Edit: The later Z28 (V8) had the 16x8 wheels

      Silver is definitely better.

I'll get a photo tomorrow of mine, I've never seen another 3rd gen with them on before.

      So red and shiney

Thanks for posting, many interesting cars you have had over the years.
I can edit images in forum posts, but not in an article page as the images are uploaded to a different part of the forum which only the 'owner' can modify. I have edited my own articles on my phone before, and a double tap on the image usually brings up a box where you can choose image size (full size scales it to width of article, so a good one to choose), although never tried this on an apple product.

Fairly sure yours are aftermarket and not original. When you post a clearer pic I'll know for sure but can also look through my (extensive!) library.

No, SLP used the same basic car as the Firebird/TA but just modified aspects, like hoods etc.
All end of era Pontiac 3rd gen's share that same front end (90-92).

I enlarged a photo from the garage of your wheels. Definitely not original. Possibly American Racing, possibly Compomotive.
